About the Artist

Amanda Oei Wells is a Sydney-based illustrator, graphic designer and fine artist known for digital painting as well as traditional media portraits and landscapes.

Oei Wells graduated from UNSW College of Fine Arts with a Bachelor of Digital Media with Distinction, and has more than 18 years experience in gaming, entertainment and education.

In 2025, she competed in Portrait Artist of the Year, an ABC television art competition that she entered with her husband Darren Wells. Her gouache portrait was a favourite of her sitter Adam Liaw and also saw her through to the semi-finals!

“Journalists have a saying: 'If you don't ask you don't get'.

After being utterly enchanted by the ABC's Portrait Artist of the Year last year, I reached out to the amazingly gifted artist Amanda Oei Wells to see if she would do a portrait of my wife Meredith Hatcher for her 70th birthday.

Amanda was an absolute delight - so gracious, so gifted (off the back of undoubtedly hard work over many years).

Meredith's emotional response was a joy to behold with a surprise personal delivery, with her fellow artist husband Darren Wells.

So grateful - so impressed - such a gifted and lovely woman.”
